Getting Help in Spanish

A few short Spanish phrases can help when you are lost, confused, looking for a place, or simply need someone to assist you.

Your next small win: ask for help, explain that you do not understand, ask someone to speak more slowly, say that you are lost, and ask where an important place is.

Start with short useful phrases

Asking for Help

These phrases are intentionally simple. They communicate that you need assistance without requiring a long explanation.

Help!
Necesito ayuda.
I need help.
¿Puede ayudarme, por favor?
Can you help me, please?
No entiendo.
I don't understand.

Ask politely

Say that you need help, then ask someone if they can help you.

Make communication easier

When You Do Not Understand

You do not need advanced Spanish to ask someone to slow down or find another way to communicate.

No entiendo.
I don't understand.
¿Puede hablar más despacio?
Can you speak more slowly?
¿Habla inglés?
Do you speak English?
¿Hay alguien que hable inglés?
Is there someone who speaks English?

Useful combination: if someone is speaking too quickly, you can simply say No entiendo. ¿Puede hablar más despacio?

Say that you do not understand and ask the person to speak more slowly.

Explain a simple problem

Lost or Missing Something

These phrases let you explain two common situations without learning complicated vocabulary.

Estoy perdido / perdida.
I am lost.
Perdí mi pasaporte.
I lost my passport.
No me siento seguro / segura.
I don't feel safe.

Agreement: some adjectives change with the speaker. A masculine speaker can say perdido or seguro. A feminine speaker can say perdida or segura.

Finding Important Places

The reusable pattern ¿Dónde está...? lets you ask where a place is.

¿Dónde está el hospital más cercano?
Where is the nearest hospital?
¿Dónde está la farmacia más cercana?
Where is the nearest pharmacy?
¿Puede mostrarme dónde está?
Can you show me where it is?

Simple health communication

Necesito un médico.
I need a doctor.
Me siento mal.
I feel unwell.
Me duele aquí.
It hurts here.

Finding a hospital
