Say what is present

Using Hay

Use hay when you want to say that an animal or object is present somewhere.

Hay tres caballos en el campo.
There are three horses in the field.
Hay muchas gallinas en la granja.
There are many hens on the farm.
Hay vacas, caballos y ovejas.
There are cows, horses, and sheep.

Key pattern: hay does not change between singular and plural. You can say Hay una vaca and Hay cinco vacas.

Using Estar for Location

Use estar when talking about the location of a particular animal or group of animals.

La vaca está en el campo.
The cow is in the field.
Los cerdos están en el corral.
The pigs are in the pen.
Las cabras están en el campo.
The goats are in the field.
Están cerca de los caballos.
They are near the horses.

Hay versus estar: use hay to introduce what is present. Use estar to locate a specific animal you are already talking about.

A few short sentences help connect the animals with familiar farm activities and places.

Las gallinas ponen huevos por la mañana.

El gallo canta por la mañana.
The rooster crows in the morning.

Gallina and pollo: gallina refers to an adult female chicken or hen. pollo can refer to a young chicken and is also the usual word for chicken as food.
